We have been doing research on how teams work and how they achieve their goals. Interesting work as most organizations (public and private) are depending on teams of people to achieve synergy in achieving goals and solving problems. Task forces, virtual teams, work teams, sales teams, management teams, leadership teams, project teams, HR teams etc.
Do teams work? Yes and No! Lots of teamwork theories and books, lots of teambuilding workshops, some are good – some are not! But do all these organizational activities on group synergy get results; measurable, tangible and to the goals of the company? Some do – most don’t!
Our years of research on teams lead us to conclude that to achieve success, there are some fundamentals to follow. First, the competencies of the potential team members; then their ability to do the job (role) that they are responsible and accountable for. Then their behavioral traits and attitudes which are critical to group success. How they communicate, behave and contribute, how they interact proactively and responsibly with others.
