In The Workplace, Episode 1 - Civility in the Workplace [Podcast]

The conversation today is about “Civility”. I was in the store the other day, looking at some goods on a shelf, and all of a sudden somebody bumped into me, holding a cellphone, texting or reading text. The person looked at me like maybe I bumped into them. Not true. So it brought up the subject of Civility. It seems to be prevalent in all cultures, in both the private and business sectors. So I did a little work.

In 2017, a study was done that said 62% of people at work globally said they experienced incivility. That’s amazing. 47% said they take actual sick leave to avoid the person who is rude to them. 78% said they are less committed to the organization because this behavior is tolerated. Well look at productivity decline, employer loyalty waning, lost time of working, resignation potentials, and you think, what is “Civility”.

Civility is just being polite, saying Please, Thank You, You’re Welcome, being peaceful and humble in how you approach those you know and those you don’t know. And being respectful of yourself and of others. Everything you read about the subject of Civility says, if you’re a civil society, you breed compassion. Isn’t that what we all want, to be more compassionate to our fellow persons? Think Civility.
